Litigation matters for these clients have often involved complex issues arising from contracts providing for the jurisdiction of foreign tribunals or the application of foreign laws or both. These representations have also provided Alex with an appreciation of the importance of the cultural context of any given case. Alex has developed a network of attorneys around the world to whom he can turn for specific advice on local laws and appearance in local courts. maritime and ShippingAlex’s maritime and shipping practice has covered virtually every aspect of maritime law, including defense of cargo claims, charter party disputes, collisions, maritime liens and attachments, and personal injury claims. He has acted for shipowners, charterers, NVOCC's, ocean terminals, marine insurers, offshore drilling companies and major film studios involved in the production of maritime films. He also has had extensive water pollution experience, representing shipowners in connection with significant oil spills, and has presented seminars on oil spill litigation issues. He has published several articles on California's oil spill statutes, the Exxon Valdez class actions, and the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act. TransactionalAlex has drafted, and advised clients regarding, a variety of business contracts, including both domestic and international sales contracts, lease agreements, and transportation-related contracts.
